Educational Facilities:
Designing Theatres That Educate Effectively
The majority of the theatres built in the US are educational theatres. These range from the simplest platforms to performing arts high schools and university performing arts centers. Several hundred new stages are built in educational facilities every year. The design process for these are as varied as the theatres, resulting in performance spaces from barely usable to inspiring.
Tom Young of JR Clancy moderates and Robin Crews of Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc. (WJHW) looks at matching the design to the curriculum, featuring different college theatres of similar size, with differing curricula. Scott Butler of Wilson Butler Architects discusses the Architect’s perspective on designing performance venues providing effective environments to train students in the theatre arts. |
